5 things I love about…

If you follow me on Tumblr and if you’ve seen my Twitter background image, I’m sure you saw this coming. Before you close the tab though, I really wish that you give this entry a chance and hopefully, some can start being open-minded about it. I promise to talk about it in a non-obsessive manner.  Don’t worry, it’s nothing close to anything bad…

It’s the awesome Canadian indie-rock duo, Tegan and Sara!!!

Hihihihi. I will now proceed to tell you the five things I love about them. I made it quick cause I mentioned that it wouldn’t be obsessive. Enjoy.

5. Their songs. Duh. No one would love a band without liking their songs. But the thing is, they’re twins and they’re in a band. It was only recently when they revealed that they write their songs separately and you can dig deep into their personalities and individuality through their song writing. Tegan’s lyrics are usually straightforward, heartfelt, and personal, and Sara’s style leans more on being poetic, dark, and vague… Yeah, I’m not a good critic. But that’s my observation. XD

One of my favorite songs from Tegan and Sara is Call It Off (written by Tegan). Even Mico likes it (yay!) most especially the line, maybe I would’ve been something you’d be good at. To him, that’s the line he says he wished he wrote, cause that just hits the heart hard and I agree!

4.Their banters and humor. They’re charming and hilarious, I swear by it! I think that their shows always have a personal touch because they spend time interacting with their audience. They may not be as big as Maroon 5, for example, but they are able to attract a large fan base because of their songs and wit. And I think it’s pretty cool how their fans unite. The banters in their shows get uploaded by their fans so everyone would know the backstory or origin behind every Tegan and Sara inside joke.

3.Their hair. I love short hair. It’s the reason why I get impatient when I say I’m letting my hair grow. And so, after watching a Joel Plaskett music video on YouTube, I saw a thumbnail of Tegan and her cute short hair in the featured videos. That’s basically how I found out about them.  =))

My favorite “hair era” of theirs was during Sainthood and after Get Along album, though I admit that their mullets from The Con are also nice. I hate mullets but they sure pulled it off for twins! (okay that’s me being biased). Besides their hair, I really think that they are really pretty for alternative women. They’re in their 30s now but they look still look like they’re 25!

mullets!

2. They make a stand. They’re gay and proud, and they fight for it. They are affiliated with Revel & Riot, an organization that’s pro-LGBTQ rights which sells nice t-shirts and different kinds of merchandise.  Sara also wrote a blog entry against Tyler the Creator who wrote homophobic slurs in his new disc, Goblin. Read it here. I’m proud of them for pursuing their passion and at the same time are not afraid of the stereotyping that happens in the music industry.

1. You can be straight and still appreciate their music. I think that their choice to be openly gay is what makes them special. So many young kids look up to them and I really hope that they know that somehow, in some way, they have saved a life through their songs. I read blogs on Tumblr saying that Tegan and Sara are their heroes because they give hope to them; that things will be okay and it will get better. The thing with their songs is that, when you actually listen to it, it can apply to any sexuality. Just because they are gay doesn’t mean their music is for gay people. Tegan said in an interview that music doesn’t have to have a sexuality, and I completely agree with that. Try listening to their songs and you can still imagine a scenario with the opposite sex just like what you do with other songs!

Tegan and Sara has definitely come a long way. To cap off the 12 years they have been in the music industry, they released a CD/DVD called Get Along late in 2011 which includes three films that capture their tours in the States and in India. The last film, For The Most Part, is a stripped down concert of 15 of their best hits. The package also comes with a live album CD which is from that film. It’s what I asked for Christmas and I only got it last week. I’m so happy I finally have it. I’m listening to it as I write this entry. :)
